OSI Systems Receives $20 Million Order for Advanced Checked Baggage Inspection Systems Based on Real Time Tomography (RTT) Technology

The RTT is a revolutionary solid-state CT system that can achieve speed and operational dynamics significantly superior to existing CT designs. RTT provides high-resolution 3-D images at exceptional speeds processing up to 1,800 bags per hour, which equates to the highest throughput available on the market today. Initial models of the RTT are targeted at the aviation checked-baggage inspection market.

Rapiscan Systems’ President, Ajay Mehra, commented, “Our next generation CT system, the RTT, allows airports to upgrade their baggage inspection infrastructure, with minimal modifications, to meet higher standards of screening required in the EU without sacrificing the operational throughput required by airports. The unique mix of CT detection performance and high throughput positions the RTT in a class by itself, and makes it the first system that truly bridges the gap between EU and US requirements.”

The order by Manchester is the initial commercial sale of the Real Time Tomography system, which offers airports significant improvement, over existing security screening technologies, in threat detection and operational efficiency.

OSI Systems’ CEO, Deepak Chopra, stated, “We are excited about the first commercial order for the Rapiscan RTT baggage inspection system. We are especially gratified that Manchester Airports Group, one of the world’s most forward-thinking airport groups, has selected the RTT. RTT’s design and performance will not only address MAG’s security requirements – it is expected to also provide lower overall operational and services costs than traditional CT based baggage scanners.”

Andrew Harrison, Managing Director, Manchester Airport, said: “Our order for the RTT technology is the latest innovative development in our approach to aviation security both in terms of improving customer service and managing potential threats. We have worked closely with Rapiscan on the development of the RTT including its trial at Manchester Airport in 2009. With its revolutionary design and unprecedented performance, Rapiscan’s RTT will help us to maintain our reputation as one of Europe’s most passenger friendly airports.”

Government of Canada Qualifies Six (6) Rapiscan X-ray Systems for Air Cargo Screening and Inspection

Background

In an effort to develop mutual recognition of air cargo security programs, the Government of Canada – in collaboration with the global partners including the United States, the European Union and Australia – has developed an Air Cargo Security (ACS) program that meets the highest standards to reduce risks to the safety and security of the travelling public. This is a similar program to U.S. TSA Certified Cargo Screening Program (CCSP).

In this measure, Transport Canada (TC) has introduced new regulatory requirements for air cargo security which applies to domestic, transborder, and international passenger flights transporting screened passengers from Canada’s designated airports. The measure requires air carriers to secure all air cargo before loading onto the aircraft to the same level of security as that for passenger baggage.

The ACS program applies to any business and/or person that ships or handles cargo that will travel by air, either domestically in Canada or to the United States and other international destinations including air carriers, freight forwarders, air carrier representatives and shippers.

Qualified Systems

The following Rapiscan systems have met the minimum requirements and will be included on the Qualified Equipment and Services Lists applicable to the Transport Canada ACS program effective immediately:

We are pleased to announce the introduction of Auto-Z™ Detection Software Solution

Auto-Z™ software is now available for the Rapiscan Eagle M60 with Material Separation option
(Mi6 Dual Energy – Eagle M60).* CUSTOMER BENEFITS

Auto-Z™ processes x-ray image data, and applies a detection algorithm based on fundamental material properties. Supporting high-throughput cargo screening Auto-Z™ automatically identifies the location of high-Z / high density material within even moderately dense cargo, items which may be difficult for an inspector to identify in the image.
Designed to detect high density threat items which could be shielded from detection by standard Radiation detection devices, Auto-Z™ provides real-time markup of the X-ray scan for immediate manual inspection intelligence.

UNIQUE FEATURES
Auto-Z™ is fully-integrated within the Rapiscan Cargo Viewer, and requires no changes to operational procedures.

This software solution is designed to aid the operator, helping reduce the potential for operator error, especially in high throughput environments.

Auto-Z™ provides the operator with real-time marking of areas which contain uncommonly high-Z materials within the cargo.

Threat objects hidden in dense or cluttered cargo, which would be challenging for an inspector to find in the X-ray image, are identified by Auto-Z and highlighted in the image. Even hidden objects that are not visible in the image are found.
Operates automatically and does not rely on the skill of the inspector.
Auto-Z™ is fully integrated with Rapiscan’s Cargo Viewer software, used on all Rapiscan Eagle® cargo and vehicle inspection products.
Auto-Z™ can be combined with Rapiscan’s radiation detection products to achieve a comprehensive capability to detect radioactive materials and nuclear threats.
Auto-Z™ can detect even shielded radioactive materials which may be missed by standard RPM’s

APPLICATIONS
Auto-Z™ automatically analyzes data generated during cargo scanning. Because it functions in real time, the addition of Auto-Z does not change or slow down the cargo screening operation. It expands cargo inspection to include detection of nuclear threats, including objects that are not readily visible in the X-ray image.

Auto-Z is a member of Rapiscan’s Inspection Suite of Operator Assist tools that help improve cargo inspection performance and throughput.

MARKET
Eagle M60 systems including Auto-Z™ Detection Software Solution have been sold to a US Government Customer for the inspection of cargo at border crossings and ports. Extensive testing has demonstrated that Auto-Z’s performance meets their requirements.

These sales put Rapiscan at the forefront of vendors offering operator assist products. Other promising opportunities are being pursued. These new products arm our sales force with proven solutions that none of our competitors can match.
